DHEKIAJULI: Protests erupted in Dhekiajuli town against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill as thousands of students from LOKD College, Dhekiajuli, and common people came out on the streets and staged protests against the Bill in different parts of NH-15, Dhekiajuli town on Wednesday.

The protesters blocked the NH-15 in front of Dhekiajuli Police Station at around noon and shouted anti-CAB, anti-BJP and anti-Sonowal slogans. At around 12.30 pm, Tezpur MP Pallab Lochan Das was stopped in front of the Dhekiajuli Police Station when he was trying to pass through the area to attend the cremation of Rangapara MLA Rajen Borthakur in Tezpur. The protesters humiliated Das by asking several questions. The MP did not make any comment. Later, the Dhekiajuli Police convinced the protesters to let him pass so that he could be present for the cremation of Rajen Borthakur. Thereafter, the protesters started a road procession in Dhekiajuli town.

The protesters asked the businessmen to shut their shops. Accordingly, all the business establishments, banks and other commercial institutions shut down immediately. A protest march was also brought out at Thelamara, Sirajuli and other parts of Dhekiajuli subdivision. Although no untoward incident was reported from any part of Dhekiajuli subdivision, the situation remains tense.
