GUWAHATI: FIRs were filed on Saturday against the AIUDF chief and MP Badruddin Ajmal over his controversial remarks, which also led to protests by several organisations.

FIRs were filed against Ajmal by Hindu Yuva Parishad and by several office- bearers of Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP). The Hindu Yuva Parishad also held protests at several places in the state, including in Lakhimpur, where an effigy of Ajmal was burned and slogans shouted against him.

In its FIR against Ajmal at Nagaon Sadar police station, the Hindu Yuva Parishad claimed that 'indecent' statements have been made against Hindus.

AJP vice- president Dulu Ahmed filed a FIR at the Hatigaon police station in the city, seeking action against AIUDF chief and Dhubri MP Badruddin Ajmal for his 'derogatory' remarks against Muslim and Hindu women. In the FIR, he mentioned that a tense situation has been created and communal tension might be stoked over these statements. He demanded that action according to the law should be taken and appropriate punishment be meted out to Ajmal after proper investigation.

The general secretary of the Barpeta district unit of AJP Sahudul Islam also filed one FIR on behalf of the political party at the Barpeta Sadar police station. He demanded that action should be taken against Ajmal for his remarks.

On the other hand, AJP's organizational secretary Govind Bayan challenged the state government to arrest Ajmal, otherwise, he said, it will be construed that a secret understanding exists between BJP and AIUDF. He also warned that communal clashes might break out over the derogatory remarks aimed at the Hindus.

It is to be mentioned here that while the Hindu Yuva Chhatra Parishad filed the complaint in support of Hindu girls and women, while Dulu Ahmed of AJP claimed that Badruddin Ajmal has been making such comments against both Muslim and Hindu girls and women.

Further, the AJP also accused Ajmal of making the remarks with the objective of conspiring to create communal clashes in the state.

The controversy erupted after the contentious statement made by All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief Badruddin Ajmal stating that Hindus should follow the Muslim formula of getting their men married at the age of 20- 22 and the girls married at the age of 18. "Hindu men have several illicit liaisons before the age of 40 and then are forced to marry. At that age, they are unable to sire healthy children. You should sow on fertile ground to get good harvests", he had said, in an apparent jibe over the slow population growth of Hindus.

Congress MP from Kaliabor Gaurav Gogoi also slammed Ajmal for his regressive and sexist comment and said that there are two politically astute men in Assam who are trying to distract the attention of the people of India through their controversial comments.
