Public meeting held against hike in property tax in Demow

DEMOW: A public meeting was organized in Demow Public Field on Wednesday evening against the excessive hike in property tax in Demow municipality area.

For the first time the Municipal Election was held in 2022 and after that the Demow Municipality Board was formed. After the people of Demow municipality area came to know that they have to pay a heavy amount as property tax, they strongly opposed. A public meeting was organized in Demow Public Playground on Wednesday evening where Parag Saikia, president of Demow Business Association, presided over it.

The people present in the public meeting said that though Demow was a municipality area, yet it lacked many civic facilities. Among 10 Ward Commissioners of Demow Municipality Board, Gaurav Gogoi, Ward Commissioner of 1 No. Ward, was present in the public meeting. Gaurav Gogoi said that when there was discussion regarding property tax in the Demow Municipality office and instructions had come from above that they should focus on property tax or funds would stop. He said that he (Gaurav Gogoi) and one another Ward Commissioner of Demow Municipality Board at first opposed it and said that they cannot pressure the public for property tax in the present time. It was decided in the public meeting that the people staying in Demow municipality area would submit a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner of Sivasagar district regarding the excessive hike of property tax. A committee was also formed where 2-3 persons of each ward of Demow Municipality Board were selected for the Nagarik Mancha.
