SILCHAR: A student’s desperate statement in a Facebook page had raised question on the efficacy of anti-ragging body of Silchar Medical College. The student in his anonymous post on a Facebook page named “Silchar Youth Confessions” stated that he was contemplating suicide after constantly harassed by his seniors. The post had already drawn the attention of both the SMCH authority as well as top brass of State police.

Dr. Babul Bezbaruah, principal of SMCH himself commented on the post assuring strict action against those who had violated the anti ragging rules. He however asked the student to lodge a written complaint with the SMCH authority. G P Singh, the Assam Police DGP shared the post in his Twitter handle and requested the student to forward the details in his inbox. Singh assured prompt action. Dr Bezbaruah too assured action. Last year at least eight students were rusticated by the SMCH authority for violating anti ragging rules.

The student who took the Facebook page narrated the humiliation he had faced by the seniors PGs which had bulldozed his confidence. “I feel like I am the most pathetic person. This is how my seniors treated me. I have no courage to speak up regarding this torture, if they come to know about my voice, they will literally murder me. I am mentally dead. And my body is not supporting anymore,” he wrote. Maintaining that the Almighty was unfair to him, the student further wrote that the seniors used to shout at the juniors for no reason and their scoldings were so loud that people used to gather to see how the juniors were being harassed. “I don’t need this danger in exchange of my life. I just wish to make our Principal Sir Dr B K Bezbaruah Sir aware of this situation. Is there no anti ragging committee? Is there anyone who can help us? Anyone who can save my life?” he further wrote.
