GUWAHATI: Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu came down heavily of educational institutions for demanding caste of students in Admission forms while seeking admission.'
Taking to his Twitter handle the minister wrote, "No caste or caste information other than Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes are required at the time of enrollment in schools or colleges. No instructions have been given by the government in this regard."
"If any educational institution seeks such information, we request that it be withdrawn," he further added.
It is to be mentioned here that as many as 10 colleges added a category of 'Community' in their online admission form where students were asked to tick mark against castes – Brahman, Ganak, Kalita, Muslim, Sudra, Baishya, and Others.
Meanwhile, the Assam government has decided to make both history and geography subjects compulsory for schools from the next academic session.
Addressing a press meet on the eve of 100 days of BJP led Assam government, Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma said that under the new education policy, the state government has decided to make it compulsory for all students in the state to study both history and geography.
"Both the subjects will be added as compulsory subjects for all students invariably from all mediums. They will learn Assam and Indian history as well as geography up to class X. It will be included in the education syllabus," the chief minister added.
The Assam government has also decided to withdraw its previous decision to reserve 75 percent of seats in undergraduate courses for state board pass-outs across all government-run colleges.
