DIGBOI: Digboi BJP MLA Suren Phukan on Wednesday said that the rehabilitation for the evicted landless and homeless people of Digboi’s Bogapani area would start very soon.

“I apprised the matter immediately to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and requested to consider rehabilitating the genuine and deserving people affected by the Railway’s eviction on February 18 from Bogapani to Tingrai Bazar stretch,” said Phukan.

“During my meeting on Wednesday afternoon, the Chief Minister assured to provide relief to the genuinely affected poor and homeless people in the form of rehabilitation,” said Phukan while talking to The Sentinel.

According to him, the Chief Minister assured to start the process without much delay in the interest of the genuinely poor and helpless victims of the eviction. “Earmarking the sites for relocation of the displaced people is our first priority which we will complete within the first week of March after securing coordination from other line departments,” said Phukan.

While supporting the genuine cause of the poor, Phukan also categorically declared that well-to-do evicted encroachers having residences elsewhere and stable source of income would never be considered for the relief by the government.

Meanwhile, more than 50 pucca and kuccha structures were dismantled by forest department, evicting around 15 hectares of forest land close to the railway eviction sites in the same area in Bogapani on Wednesday morning.

“Most of the evicted people from railway land have started erecting fresh structures on forest land which we cleared peacefully on Wednesday,” informed TC Ranjith, the DFO of Digboi, adding that in all more than 50 houses were dismantled.

Around 196 families were evicted during the railway eviction drive stretching from Bogapani to Tingrai Bazar. However, the drive by the railway department was temporarily halted due to the court’s stay order.
