DOOMDOOMA: The family member of two deceased coal mine workers called a press meeting in the Doomdooma Press Club on Wednesday to ask for proper compensation for the deaths of Kartik Goala and Bijoy Munda.

The family members mentioned that an incident took place on January 22 in Tirap of Ledu. In the accident, Kartik Goala (aged 24 years) from Kothalguri village and Bijoy Munda (aged 25 years) from Mamoni village in Makum were killed because of a methane gas leakage. They were reportedly working under Rupam Chakraborty, Sanjay Thakur and Kshitish Devnath when the incident took place.

The contractors involved in the illegal coal mining handed over the bodies to the families of the deceased workers on the next day after the necessary post-mortem procedures, following which the last rites were carried out. But no financial compensation was made to the poor families and neither did anyone visit the families for asking about the conditions of the two widows as well as the three children left behind with no one to attend to.

The family members as well as the representative of Johar Legal Associates put forward a demand for Rs 25 lakhs each as compensation for the families. They also demanded a complete stop to the illegal coal mining that is being carried out in the region. And urged the local authorities to register a case and take all the necessary against the three contractors named by the family.

They also mentioned that until any concrete action is taken by the authorities, the death of workers will keep on going on. They also mentioned that many people have died in the past in the same way.

Assam DGP GP Singh on Friday ordered the DIG (NER) for a proper investigation into the alleged ‘missing’ case of Pranjal Moran and asked to take proper action against the perpetrator within 7 days. The DGP issued the dictate after Pranjal Moran’s wife visited him at his office to complain about her husband’s mysterious disappearance and request the Assam Police to recover her missing husband.
