Renewed call for inclusion of Assamese language in Unicode

LAKHIMPUR: The International Mother Language Day was observed in Lakhimpur Commerce College on Monday along with the rest of the world with renewed calls to expedite necessary actions for the inclusion of Assamese language in the Unicode. An event on this occasion was organized jointly by the departments of Assamese, English and Hindi of the college to mark the day, which was attended by all the faculty members and students.

The event was inaugurated by Dr Lohit Hazarika, Principal of the college, where the objective of the meeting was explained by Professor Achyut Kumar Gogoi of the Assamese department. The meeting was chaired by Professor Tilak Chandra Deka, Head of the Department of Assamese where Professor Sazzad Hussain, Head of the Department of English and columnist, delivered the introductory lecture on International Mother Language Day, its history and significance as well its relevance in the present socio-cultural scenario.

The theme of the International Mother Language Day of this year—Using Technology for Multilingual Learning: Challenges and Opportunities - was elaborately explained and delivered in the key-note address by Dr. Harini Patowary Das, Department of English. Dr Manjumani Saikia of Hindi department and Dr Bibha Dutta of Assamese department also made deliberations on the topic in the meeting.

All the speakers at the meeting urged the platforms concerned and experts to speed up the process of the inclusion of Assamese language in the Unicode for the digital future of the language.
