LAKHIMPUR: No minister of the State Government has visited Lakhimpur district till date in order to take stock of the severe flood situation. Though several minsters have visited the flood-affected areas of other districts across the State, neither Guardian Minister Sanjay Kishan nor any other minister has spared a day to visit the flood-affected district, alleged the conscious section of people of the district.

Massive flash flood created by Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project (SLHP) has severely hit Lakhimpur district since August 26. The excess water in the catchment area of the project, rolling over the main dam with three to four metre height, inundated a total of 155 revenue villages under five Revenue Circles (RCs) of the district. Till Monday, 72 revenue villages under North Lakhimpur RC, 38 under Bihpuriya RC, 26 under Narayanpur RC, 9 under Kadam RC and 6 under Dhakuakhana RC had been submerged in flash flood.

On the other hand, the flash flood has affected a total of 1,30,001 people, 29,316 animals and 8,133 hectares of crop areas. The situation has turned grim in almost all the flood-affected villages, including Ghunasuti area. Flash flood has paralyzed the normal life the people in the affected area, creating shortage of food items and pure drinking water for people and fodder for livestock. Lakhimpur is the worst flood affected districts in the State along with Majuli, Darrang, Biswanath, Dhemaji and Sivasagar.

Despite such circumstances, no visit of any minister of the State Government to the district during these troubled times has resulted in resentment among the flood-affected people.
