Rhino Hit by Truck in Assam Doing Well, Claims Forest Dept

GUWAHATI: The forest department of Assam has said that the rhino which was hit by a speeding truck on NH-715 at Haldhibari in Kaziranga on Saturday last while attempting to cross the road, in doing well now.

The forest department has spotted the rhino and said that the rhino is doing good.

Chief Minister of the state Himanta Biswa Sarma shared on his Twitter handle a video of the rhino that was captured with the help of drones on Tuesday.

"Our Rhino friend, who met with an accident in Haldhibari recently, is found to be doing good", Assam CM wrote on Twitter.

He also urged everyone to be kind to the animals and appealed to the people to drive slow while passing through the animal corridors.

The rhino was hit by a speeding truck on Saturday but however, finally managed to get up and went inside the forest.

The entire incident was captured on a camera and following which the police has detained the vehicle and slapped a fine of Rs 9000 per the directives of the National Green Tribunal and for violating the provisions of the MV Act.

Ramesh Gogoi, who is serving as the divisional forest officer of eastern Assam wildlife division, said after the incident the forest department has used drones to trace the rhino and said that no injuries were spotted on the rhino and confirmed that the rhino was doing good.

Earlier, In a first-of-its-kind incident, Poachers chopped off the horn of rhino in Assam's Orang National Park without killing the latter. Reportedly, the whole incident came to light after a dehorned rhino was spotted at the Orang National Park which triggered panic among forest officials.

According to reports, earlier it appeared to be a case of territorial fight among the rhinos. However, after the veterinarian examined the rhino, it was discovered that there wasn't any injury to the Rhino.
