Rhino Poacher From Assam Arrested In Kerala Escapes Police Custody

Guwahati: Rhino poacher -- Asmat Ali-- who was recently arrested from Kerala escaped from police custody in Assam's Biswanath district on Monday.

According to reports, the poacher after running away from the police custody jumped into the Brahmaputra River.

Meanwhile, the Assam government has declared him as an absconder and also announced a reward of Rs 5 lakh for those who will give inputs about him.

Ali was involved in large scale poaching of one-horned rhino which is primarily found in the state.

The Kerala Police nabbed him from Malappuram district, where he stayed with migrant workers from northeastern states and was handed over to the Assam Police on February 16.

On January 20, this year, a rhino carcass was recovered in Hikekhonda under Kaziranga Range in Assam.

Interestingly, a day before the carass was recovered Kevin Pietersen had appreciated the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government on the dropping of Rhino poaching in Assam, the state saw another case of suspected Rhino poaching.

According to media reports, the carcass was of a full-grown Rhino that was found in Hikekahonda under Kaziranga Range in Assam.
