GUWAHATI: In a welcoming note for the wildlife enthusiasts of Assam, the Pobitora wildlife sanctuary in the state has recorded a total of 107 great one-horned rhinoceros as per the latest census.

Among the 107 rhinos found following the census, the sanctuary consists of 50 females rhinos, 30 males and 27 calves.

Notably, the Pobitora wildlife sanctuary located in the Marigaon district of Assam covers an area of 38.81 square kilometer but the census shows improvement in its conservation number of animals in such small areas.

On Tuesday 22 March and Wednesday 23 March 2022, a census was carried out in the Pobitora wildlife sanctuary on the southern bank of the Brahmaputra River.

The census carried out for two consecutive days shows the presence of 107 Indian rhinoceros in the sanctuary which has increased by 5 as compared to the previous census.

The last census was carried out in Pobitora wildlife sanctuary in the year 2018 and a total of 102 rhinos were recorded by that time.

Throughout the two days census on Tuesday and Wednesday, nine observers and eleven enumerators from different organizations were deployed in various parts of the sanctuary.

The authorities had divided the whole wildlife sanctuary into 9 different clocks to count the number of great Indian rhinos dwelling in the Pobitora wildlife sanctuary.

The forest officials used the Block Count Method for the final assessment and NGOs like local NGO-Hipa Aranyak, Elephant Foundation and WWF volunteered in the process.

Local communities, police officials, district administration, conservation partners, resort owners and Jeep Safari Owners Association extended support to the census team.

It may be mentioned that the sanctuary has played a major role in showing the highest density of rhino population within just 38.91 sq km and this led to a notable change in the betterment of the wildlife.

Moreover, the Pobitora wildlife sanctuary has also improved in the sector of wildlife conservation by preventing poaching incidents within its area as no such incidents have been recorded since the year 2014.
