KOKRAJHAR: The All Bodo Students' Union (ABSU), Ramfalbil Anchalik Committee, in association with the GB Basumatary Charitable Trust, on Tuesday observed the 21st death anniversary of Daoharu Garla Batha Basumatary, former president of the ABSU, founder president of the People's Democratic Front (PDF) and a great movement leader of Bodoland at his burial place at Shyamthaibari in Kokrajhar district.

Addressing the gathering at the time of paying tribute to Garla Batha Basumatary, the Executive Member (EM) of BTR, Ranjit Basumatary said that Daoharu Garla Batha Basumatary devoted his life for the Bodoland movement and his dedication for the Bodo society would be remembered by the generations to come. He said that Basumatary led the Bodos from the front but unfortunately he was victim of factional fight between brothers of the same community. He also said that most of the Bodo leaders- right from Bihuram Boro, the then president of the Bodo Sahitya Sabha (BSS), to many great Bodo personalities -lost lives due to factional fight and difference of ideology. Terming the fratricidal killings as most unfortunate, Basumatary said that the factional fight happened due to wrong policies and suspicion.

"We have to learn many lessons from the past to lead the society in the right way," he said. He assured that the birth place of Daoharu Garla Batha Basumatary would be made a model village, as announced by Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) chief Pramod Boro.

Earlier, the chairman of the GB Basumatary Charitable Trust, Rajen Mashahary, hoisted the flag of the trust while wife of Basumatary, Raktima Basumatary paid floral tribute at the portrait of her husband. The tribute was also paid by general secretary of Kokrajhar district ABSU, Khampa Basumatary, former BTC EM, Sabharam Basumatary, former MCLAs-Jyotirindra Brahma and Indra Mohan Brahma and leaders of BSS, ABWWF, Boro Somaj, Bathou Gouthum and others.
