TEZPUR: “The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 is a progressive realization and with this we need to develop a robust system for implementing it in our higher education level,” Prof. Nani Gopal Mahanta, Education Adviser to the Government of Assam, said while addressing participants of the online week-long Faculty Development Programme on ‘Implementation of NEP 2020 in Higher Educational Institutes’ organized by the Teaching Learning Centre, Tezpur University.
Prof Mahanta further said that Assam is gearing to launch the NEP 2020 soon. He explained the socio-economic and academic framework under which the State is going to implement NEP. He highlighted some of the challenges that are to be faced and how to transform the educational system.
“One of the challenges is enormous growth of young population which is to be utilized into some useful resource,” Prof. Mahanta said. “The government wants the academic institutions to become innovative with the use of technology so that students can be offered blended courses, massive open online courses (MOOCs) etc.,” Prof. Mahanta further advised the stakeholders.
The Faculty Development Program (FDP), which was organized during April 26, 2023 to May 2, 2023, aimed at making the participants aware of NEP so that it can be implemented effectively in its true letter and spirit in the higher educational institutes of the north-eastern region. A total of 500 faculty members from 24 States of the country joined the FDP where 14 experts from various fields of expertise shared their views on NEP 2020 in different academic discussion sessions. The programme was inaugurated by Prof. Dhruba K. Bhattacharyya, former Pro Vice Chancellor of Tezpur University, where he focused on the issue of ‘Education for Sustainable Development’. The 11 technical sessions were conducted on various aspects related to NEP 2020.
Four Vice Chancellors of state and central universities took part in a panel discussion to discuss the innovative components of NEP 2020. One of the sessions was taken by Prof. Pankaj Mittal, Secretary General, Association of Indian Universities.
