LAKHIMPUR: A symposium on ‘Nationalism and Ethnic Identity in Assamese Language’ was held in Lakhimpur Commerce College on Tuesday in North Lakhimpur.
The symposium was organized by Sahitya Akademi, Eastern Zone, in association with Lakhimpur Commerce College as part of its golden jubilee celebrations. The inaugural session of the symposium was chaired by Dr Lohit Hazarika, Principal of the college.
The welcome address of the inaugural session was delivered by Dr Devendra Kumar Devesh, Secretary, Sahitya Akademi, Eastern Zone, Kolkata. In his inaugural address Dr. Devesh said that Sahitya Akademi had been celebrating the linguistic and literary diversity of India by promoting various languages and literatures. By quoting Dr S. Radhakrishnan, he said that the translation works by Sahitya Akademi has been to make a national identity or Indianness from regional languages. An introduction speech was delivered by Diganta Biswa Sarma, convener of Assamese Advisory Board, Sahitya Akademi. The key-note address of the inaugural session was delivered by Phanindra Kumar Dev Chawdhury, who is eminent novelist of the State. The inaugural session of the symposium was held under the management of Professor Sazzad Hussain, a columnist and the convener of the organizing committee while the vote of thanks was delivered by Dr Harini P. Das.
The inaugural session was followed by the first technical session which was chaired by Satyakam Borthakur, Professor of Dibrugarh University. Bedabrata Deva Mishra, Deputy Editor, Dainik Asom and Dr. Arabinda Rajkhowa, columnist-cum-Head of the Department of Assamese North Lakhimpur College (Autonomous) presented research papers on the topic of the symposium. The second technical session was chaired by Dr Madhurjya Mandita Baruah, Member, Assamese Advisory Board, Sahitya Akademi. Jyotishmita Sarmah, Advocate, Gauhati High Court and Dr. Biva Dutta, Assistant Professor of Lakhimpur Commerce College presented research papers in the second session of the symposium.
‘Abelir Rong’, a collection of short stories in Assamese by Dr Sikhamoni Borgohain, Assistant Professor of Economics, Lakhimpur Commerce College, was released by eminent novelist Phanindra Kumar Dev Chawdhury on that occasion.
