Boko: Bamunigaon Protection Range staff recovered 20 pieces of Sal and Teak logs whose market value is around Rs 2 lakh at Pritipur village under Boko Police Station on Tuesday.
Bamunigaon Protection Range officer Lakheswar Das said that on Tuesday morning he got information that some smugglers carrying wood logs on handcarts had passed near the Lampara Forest Beat Office. The Ranger and his team immediately launched a search operation and they got the wood logs at Pritipur village, but the smugglers managed to flee When the Ranger and his team were preparing to seize the wood logs, some villagers tried to stop them. Ranger Das contacted the West Kamrup Divisional Forest Officer, Ranjan Goswami and he immediately send forest staff from Singra, Bamunigaon and Kukurmara Forest Range office and Boko Police also reached the place and brought the situation under control.
Ranger Lakheswar Das said that he would lodge an FIR at Boko Police Station regarding this matter. Sailen Mahanta, Lampara Forest Beat Officer said, “We always patrol the area but smugglers manage to cut down valuable trees. They have a strong informer’s team and that is why they always succeed to do this.” He also added that the wood logs were cut from the Gohaingurung Reserve Forest which is near the Lampara Forest Beat Office.
On the other hand, Debajit Kalita, a social activist, alleged that deforestation was continuously going on with the help of certain officials of the forest department. Kalita recently started a plantation drive to plant 5,000 saplings in the South Kamrup area.
