Saraswati Puja to be celebrated today in Demow

Mani Paul, a resident of Demow Dehajan and owner of Rongpur Silpalay in Demow Dehajan, along with his five staff, has been making different idols for Puja since the last 47 years.

DEMOW: Mani Paul, a resident of Demow Dehajan and owner of Rongpur Silpalay in Demow Dehajan, along with his five staff, has been making different idols for Puja since the last 47 years. He is a popular and the oldest artisan in Demow area.

Talking to The Sentinel on Sunday afternoon, Mani Paul said that he and his staff have been making idols of Goddess Saraswati idols since the last two months. He said that he went through a difficult time during the lockdown and lamented that he did not get any help from the government at that time.

Paul's Goddess Saraswati idols are taken to various places throughout Thowra constituency like Demow, Rajmai, Rajabari, Bamrajabari, Teteliguri, Athabari and Kharahat. The educational institutions of Demow usually buy idols from him. This time the price of the big idols is Rs 8,000 while that of the small ones is Rs 1,500.

This year, Mani Paul and his staff have made 50 Saraswati idols so far. Compared to the previous year, the sale of idols is good this year but the price of the idols has increased due to rise in prices of materials required to make the idols, said Paul.
