LAKHIMPUR: The Lakhimpur district unit of Asom Anusuchita Jati Yuba-Chatra Santha (AAJYCS), the common forum of the youths and students belonging to the Scheduled Castes (SC) has demanded the Government of Assam and the Water Resources Department to plug the breach of the Subansiri right embankment at Chandrapur immediately. In this regard, the organization submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma through the Deputy Commissioner of Lakhimpur on Friday.
Notably, the devastating erosion caused by River Subansiri breached its right embankment (Ghancharai 35 KM) at Chandrapur under Madhya Telahi Gaon Panchayat of Telahi Development Block on October 9 due to alleged failure of the Water Resources Department (WRD) with regard to protecting the same. Since then, the flood of the river has been inundating Telia Pothar, Na-Ali, Kandali Pothar, Dolpata, Rantijan, Bhereki, Kuhiyarbari etc. villages and the crop areas. Through massive erosion, the largest tributary of the mighty Brahmaputra has already engulfed the residential areas under several villages and rendered lots of families homeless. At present also, the river has affected new places near the breach and other places posing more threat to the embankment. Despite this, neither the Lakhimpur district administration nor the division concerned of the Water Resources Department has initiated prompt initiatives to plug the breach of the embankment which has posed a massive threat to over 45 villages under the Telahi Development Block.
Under such circumstances, Lakhimpur district AAJYCS, along with the other organizations of the district, demanded the government to construct the embankment and check the erosion by implementing scientific measures at the earliest. Through the same memorandum, the organization demanded the government to compensate the erosion-affected families and to allot land to the homeless families to rehabilitate them.
