KOKRAJHAR: The BTR has witnessed return of peaceful atmosphere but despite this fact the rate of school dropout, child marriage and kidnapping and trafficking cases are very high.
A brief discussion was held between the media persons of Kokrajhar and the functionaries of Centre for Development and Peace Studies held at Bodoland Guest House, Kokrajhar on Sunday where issues relating to child was discussed. In the discussion, the increasing rate of child marriage, school dropout, kidnapping, trafficking and other related issues were figured. The Centre for Development and Peace Studies (CDPS) has decided to organize a media workshop in Kokrajhar in early part of August and orientation programme on the issues with MCLAs and Chairmen of TCLCC (Territorial Council Level Coordination Committee) in November to bring awareness among them.
The Chief Functionary of CDPS Wasbir Hussain showed the data of school dropout in BTC. According to data of the CDPS, Baksa district of BTC had the highest rate of school dropout in LP, UP and Secondary level. The district has 49.13 pc school drop out in LP against state’s rate of 6.02, 47.25 pc in Upper Primary against state’s rate-8.82pc and 54.75 pc in Secondary School level against state’s rate 20.25. Kokrajhar has school dropout rate of 6.95 pc in LP, 7.38 pc in UP and 16.54 pc in Secondary level, all bellow state’s rate while Chirang district has school dropout rate of 3.76 pc in LP, 2.87 pc in UP and 17.63 pc in Secondary level, lower than the state’s rate. Meanwhile, Udalguri district has a school drop out rate of 4.56 pc in LP, 4.37 pc in UP and 8.72 pc in Secondary level. The dropout rate in Baksa has become serious in BTC.
Meanwhile, in the last HSLC result of 2023, Baksa district stood in 2nd position in BTC next to Chirang which is in the top list in the state with 88.68 pc. As per data of Assam Higher Secondary Education Council result, Chirang district secured top position in Assam this year with 88.68 pc. A total of 5502 students appeared in the HSLC examination of which 1415 stood in 1st division, 2669 stood in 2nd division and 795 stood in 3rd division. A total of 4879 students passed. Baksa district of BTC had a total 113,256 students of which 11,160 passed with 3811 in 1st division, 5265 in 2nd division and 2084 in 3rd division with overall pass percentage of 88.68 pc. The overall pass percentage was 84.19 pc.
Kokrajhar district witnessed a total of 15689 students in the examination of which 10,417 passed with 2031 in 1st division, 5260 in 2nd division and 3126 in 3rd division with overall pass percentage of 66.40pc. Similarly, Udalguri witnessed a total of 11,091 students in the examination of which 7250 came out successful with 2007 in 1st division, 3596 in 2nd division and 1647 in 3rd division with overall pass percentage of 65.37pc.
The members and representatives of CDPS also discussed the rising cases of kidnapping and trafficking of children in BTR which have over 400 cases in both. There are also over 500 cases of child marriage in four districts of BTC. Besides, the increasing trend of child abuse and drug addict was also discussed.
