‘Scrap Citizenship (Amendment) Bill’- organizations unanimously raised strong demand

LAKHIMPUR: A total of 31 organizations, led by Lakhimpur district unit of Axam Xahitya Xabha and All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), unanimously raised strong demand to scrap the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019 for the sake of safeguarding the languages and colourful culture of the indigenous communities of Assam.

These organizations, including the Xahitya Xabhas of various communities, student organizations, journalist organizations, press clubs, pensioners’ association, artistes, writers, literary personalities, senior citizens and many other organizations, on Tuesday staged a four-hour long mass sit-in from 11am to 2pm at Swahid Bakari of North Lakhimpur opposing the Bill which is considered to be a tremendous threat to the existence of the Assamese and Assam.

In the protest programme, leaders of various organizations came down heavily against the contentious Bill and demanded the Union Government not to pass it in the Rajya Sabha. AXX vice-president Dr. Hemanta Kumar Baruah, JAFA president Kushal Saikia, the activists and dignitaries of ATASU, MMK, Mising Janajati Mahila Samiti, Koch Rajbonshi Sanmilan, AKRSU, Matar Shramik Santha, Boro Mahila Kalyan Parishad, Sasetan Nagarik Mancha, ME School Teachers’ Association, North Lakhimpur Press Club and Boginadi Press Club were also present in the programme.

Gossaigaon: Gossaigaon district Karmachari Parishad staged a three-hour sit-in in front of the Gossaigaon SDO(C) office against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019. Mahesh Basumatary, president of Gossaigaon district Karmachari Parishad (GDKP), Raj Kumar Brahma, secretary of GDKP, along with the members of Gossaigaon Anchalik AASU were present during the sit-in.

UDALGURI: Udalguri Zila Karmachari Parishad staged a three-hour sit-in in front of the Udalguri DC’s office on Wednesday to demand scrapping of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019. Santiram Sarma, the president of Udalguri Zila Karmachari Parishad, elaborated the present situation in Assam arising out of the CAB. Baidyanath Upadhyaya, the secretary of Udalguri Zila Madhyamik Sikshak aru Karmachari Parishad, Dilip Bora, the adviser of Udalguri Zila Karmachari Parishad, and others spoke on the occasion.

SARUPATHAR: The All Assam Karmachari Parishad of Dhansiri subdivision in Golaghat district staged a massive protest in front of the Subdivisional office at Sarupathar for three hours against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019. On the other hand, AGP activists of Sarupathar also took out a massive rally from the AGP office to Padumoni in Sarupathar in protest against the Bill. The activists demanded scrapping of the controversial Bill. “The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019 should be scrapped since it is a threat to the culture, language, land and identity of Assamese people,” said the activists. More than 1,000 employees and more than 1,000 AGP activists staged protest with placards in their hands and they also shouted various slogans demanded scraping of the Bill.
