Scribe bodies condemn police action on media person

Different scribe bodies on Monday condemned the police action on a working press correspondent of an electronic media house of Chirang and demanded that the guilty police personnel should be punished.

KOKRAJHAR: Different scribe bodies on Monday condemned the police action on a working press correspondent of an electronic media house of Chirang and demanded that the guilty police personnel should be punished. Some journalists' bodies have decided to stage protest on Tuesday against the police action.

Sources said Jayanta Debnath, a local correspondent of Basugaon in Chirang district representing an electronic media based at Guwahati was allegedly manhandled by police at Basugaon town on Monday.

The police claimed that Jayanta Debnath was not following traffic rules. Sources said the police team on duty stopped Debnath for not wearing a helmet at Basugaon town and there an argument broke out between the two. The constable, then all of a sudden, physically attacked Debnath and badly injured him. Debnath was taken to Lower Assam Hospital and Research Centre, Bongaigaon for treatment.

Meanwhile, the president of Bodoland Journalists' Association (BJA) Abu Bakar Siddique, president of Chirang district Journalists' Association for Assam (JAFA) Abhideep Choudhury, secretary of Kokrajhar Press Club Hantigiri Narzary and secretary of Chirang district APCU Mukut Raj Sharma have vehemently condemned the manhandling of police on media person in Chirang and demanded the arrest of the police personnel who physically attacked Debnath. The JAFA, Chirang district committee has decided to stage a protest at district headquarter Kajalgaon on Tuesday.
