Second Medical College Coming Up In Guwahati, Assam Govt Inks MoU

A second medical college after the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital is soon coming up in the city, to be named as Pragjyotishpur Medical College.

GUWAHATI: In what has come as a major boost in advancement of medical education and research in Assam, the 2nd medical college here will soon be a reality. Towards that, the Government of Assam signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with investment firm, Bright Star Investments Private Limited on Friday.

The ceremony held at the Janata Bhawan in Dispur was attended by Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, Health Minister Keshab Mahanta, and founder of Bright Star Investments Private Limited Radhakishan Damani among others.

Notably, the Medical College to be built in the Public Private Partnership (PPP) Mode with an investment of Rs. 150 Crores by the Bright Star Investments Private Limited is all set be named as Pragjyotishpur Medical College.

Speaking at the occasion, CM Sarma mentioned that the session for the new medical college shall start from 2024. He further said, "Within the next five years, there will be 24 medical colleges in the state and following the construction work of all the medical colleges, MBBS seats will be 2,700."

It may be recalled here that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma laid the Foundation Stone of the new medical cost back in February this year.

In his speech, CM Sarma presented an overview of his Government's plan to go about with the medical college. The proposed Pragjyotishpur Medical College will be stationed in two campuses, one at the Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital or MMCH in city's Panbazar area and the other at Kalapahar. The facility at Panbazar in the MMCH premises will have 800 beds besides 100 Intensive Care Units (ICUs) and other state of the art facilities. It will also have 11 Operation Theatres (OTs) and a separate dialysis unit.

On the other hand, the other campus in the Kalapahar area will be equipped with 480 beds along with 46 ICUs and 7 OTs.

Later in a tweet, Chief Minister Sarma exuded confidence that the establishment of the medical college through the PPP mode will bring in the development of medical education and research in the region.
