KOKRAJHAR: On the occasion of the 400th birth anniversary of Bir Lachit Barphukan, a seminar on 'Lachit Barphukan and Legacy of Contemporary Assam' was held on Tuesday at the initiative of the Kokrajhar district administration in the auditorium of BTC Assembly House, Kokrajhar. The seminar was moderated by Prof. Laishram Laddu Singh, Vice Chancellor, Bodoland University.

The programme started with the introductory speech delivered by Varnali Deka, Deputy Commissioner of Kokrajhar, who spoke about the purpose of the seminar and widespread relevance of the topic on people from all walks of life.

On the occasion, Dr Sudev Chandra Basumatary, Head of the Department of History of Bodoland University, delivered a lecture on Bir Lachit Barphukan while revisiting the marginalized history of Assam. Comparing Bir Lachit Barphukan with Shivaji, he said that Lachit Barphukan was not given due importance in history like Shivaji was given as the historians of that period wrote only about Ahoms and the Ahom-Mughal conflict but they did not write more about Lachit Barphukan. He stressed rewriting the history of Bir Lachit Barphukan. On the other hand, Dr Gunendra Kumar Sharma, Assistant Professor, Kokrajhar Government College, delivered a lecture on the life history of Lachit Borphukan and his career as a general of the Ahom army and the Battle of Saraighat.

Eminent personalities and scholars, including former Principals of Kokrajhar Government College, Dr Surat Narzary, Dr Binay Kumar Brahma, all Deans of Bodoland University, academicians of different colleges participated in the seminar in addition to many students. The seminar also brought out interesting historical conjectures on the connection between Bodoland, Kokrajhar and the Battle of Saraighat.
