SILCHAR: Saharul Haque Mazumdar, district secretary of SFI had lodged an FIR with Silchar Sadar Police against Siddharth Sankar Nath, principal of Cachar College and three ABVP cadres. Saharul alleged that he was beaten up by the ABVP cadres inside the college at the instruction of Nath for writing of his left party's slogan on the wall of the college.

Later he was rescued by police from inside a room of the college where he was locked up by the cadres of the right wing student body. The incident happened on last Sunday and police received the FIR on Monday late evening. Principal Nath could not be contacted. On the other hand, Cachar unit of ABVP had distanced itself from the case clarifying that the incident happened between the college principal and some members of SFI and ABVP had no role in it. Nitish Tewari, one of the ABVP cadres whose name figured in the FIR argued that since the incident happened on Sunday, there was no question of him being in the college.

Meanwhile, CPM district general secretary Dulal Mitra informed the police and at around 7 pm Saharul was rescued from inside the college. According to police, principal Nath had argued that Saharul was painting on the college boundary wall without permission. Saharul misbehaved with him when he asked him to stop writing on the wall, Nath added. The principal further reportedly told the police that Saharul was not allowed to leave the college campus until his guardians arrived.
