Sibsagar Commerce College (SCC) organizes programme on gender equality

SIVASAGAR: A lecture and technical session on ‘Empowerment of Women through Digital Technology’ and a ‘Vocal for Local’ titled ‘Exhibition-cum-Sale’ of the goods produced by the students of Sibsagar Commerce College (SCC) was organized jointly by Women’s Study Cell and Department of Commerce at Sibsagar Commerce College on Wednesday.

Inaugurating the exhibition-cum-sale, Principal of the college, Dr Saumar Jyoti Mahanta said that in present day scenario, women entrepreneurship was leading in the start-ups related to Aatmanirbhar Bharat. He also stressed the need for women entrepreneurship and participation of women in other economic activities for economic development of the nation.

The lecture session was started with the ceremonial lighting of lamp by Bharati Saikia, social worker and entrepreneur. In her speech, Bharati Saikia spoke about the role of society and changing mindset in the goal of women. Joining the programme, Daisy Gogoi, DSP, Sivasagar stated about the provisions for women in the area of law and security. She made the girl students aware about taking help of police in cyber-crime like voyeurism, stalking etc. In her speech, social worker Dipika Duwari, referring to women personalities like Draupadi Murmu, Nirmala Sitharaman, urged the girls to come forward and actively participate in different aspects of the society. Convener of Women’s Study Cell and Head, Department of Commerce, Sibsagar Commerce College, Mrinali Mahanta stressed the need of women learning digital technology. In the programme, senior journalist Khairuddin Ahmed, college professors, Dr Debajit Saharia, Dr Pankaj Jyoti Hazarika, social worker Bornali Boruah, entrepreneur Juri Changmai, Poli Phukan expressed their views on different aspects of women empowerment. In the technical session of the programme, Sumi Gogoi, Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Application of the college, spoke about the issues of cyber security, safe use of internet and mobile and use of apps available online in learning skills and in students’ education.

In the programme, a drama titled Timir Pharia Baaje based on gender discrimination, written by Mrinali Mahanta and directed by Krishna Baruah, was staged by the students of the college. At the end of the programme, a short film on ‘Gender Equality’ written and planned by Mrinali Mahanta and directed by Sanijv Das was screened before the audience.
