NAMCHI: A tragic incident was reported in the state of Sikkim where a twenty-two-year-old student was swept away by water on Tuesday night. The incident reportedly took place in the Kazitar locality of Namchi town.
The victim of the incident was identified as Padam Gurung. He was the president of the student representative council of the Namchi Government College. A case was registered regarding the incident at the Namchi Police Station and a search operation was initiated, leading to the discovery of the dead body in the early morning. The body was shifted to the Namchi District Hospital and later transferred to the Sir Thutob Namgyal Memorial Hospital for the autopsy procedure.
The reports mentioned that the boy had suffered wounds in one direction of the body as though it was being swept off. It also pointed to a struggle for breathing as a lot of water and sand particles were found inside his lungs. They however refrained from making any official statement as the police investigation was still ongoing.
Meanwhile several key political members of the state including Kunga Nima Lepcha - the education minister of Sikkim and Indra Hang Subba - the Member of Parliament from Sikkim visited the hospital. Several student as well as local people also paid their homages to the departed student leader in the hospital.
Meanwhile, in the state of Assam, the district-wise flood-affected villages in the state are 142 in Kamrup, 78 in Nalbari, 75 in Barpeta, 33 in Darrang, and 30 in Bajali. Though the state has 106 relief camps, they are almost empty of inmates. Barpeta, Dhubri, and Goalpara received the worst blow insofar as the damage to infrastructure is concerned. The Tinkunia River eroded a tea garden bund in Halem, the Amloga River eroded an embankment in Chariduar, the Doodhara-Doomni Road got damaged in Jalah, the Suva-Jatradia Road got damaged in Chenga, etc.
