SILCHAR: The Silchar Congress office on Monday turned into an open-for- all battlefield as two groups scuffled over the nomination for the post of district Youth Congress presidentt. The angry cadres engaged in fisticuffs in front of APCC general secretary Apurba Bhattacharjee who, too, was reportedly misbehaved with by the members. Sources said that the house was divided into two groups, APCC working president Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha being the centre figure of the fissure. Purkayastha, the Karimganj MLA, was allegedly trying to nominate Pallab Yadav, a Youth Congress leader from the Karimganj district as the president of the youth branch in Cachar. The group opposing the move shouted slogans against Purkayastha and burnt his effigy alleging that he was selling the party to the BJP. Some angry cadres were seen with sticks and chased the other group reportedly close to Siddique Ahmed, the South Karimganj MLA who was recently suspended by the Congress for allegedly betraying the party candidate Ripun Bora in last week's Rajya Sabha election.

Today meeting, chaired by Apurba Bhattacharjee, was convened to discuss the preliminary strategy for the forthcoming municipality election.

Earlier Silchar Congress demonstrated against the recent price rise.
