DIBRUGARH: Silpi Divas was celebrated at Tamulbari Tea Estate in Dibrugarh on Tuesday. Silpi Divas was celebrated all over Assam every year to mark the death anniversary of the cultural icon and freedom fighter Jyoti Prasad Agarwala. People from all walks of life gathered at Tamulbari, the birth place of Jyoti Prasad Agarwala and paid floral tributes on the statue of the cultural icon.
"Jyoti Prasad Agarwala was born at Tamulbari Tea Estate in Dibrugarh on June 17, 1903. The government has not taken any initiative to restore his bungalow. After an initiative of a nobel tea planter and noted writer Debi Prasad Bagrodi, Jyoti Prasad Agarwala's bungalow has been renamed as 'Jyoti Tirtha'. Jyoti Prasad Agarwala was born in this house and spend his childhood but the Government of Assam has not taken any initiative to preserve the house," Jadav Gogoi, a resident of Lahowal said.
Jyoti Prasad Agarwala was the 'Rupkonwar' of Assam who was the first filmmaker. He had contributed a lot for the Assamese cinema. He was instrumental in pioneering Assamese cinema by producing the State's first Assamese film 'Joymoti' in 1935.
JAMUGURIHAT: The death anniversary of the legendary artiste was observed with various cultural activities in the educational institutions of the greater Jamugurihat area including Dekorai HSS, THB College, Panpur HSS, Tupiya Panchgaon Academy, Jamuguri Academy, North Jamuguri HSS, Nagsankar High School, Dakhin Nagsankar High School, Rangachakuwa HSS and LP schools under Naduar Elementary Education Block. The special day was observed at Jamuguri HSS in association with WARIORS (Women Awareness and Rural Invigorate Organization cum Radiant Society) at Parshu Hazarika Memorial Hall located at Herapuwa village, Jamugurihat. The programme began with the illumination of earthen lamps in front of the portrait of Jyoti Prasad Agarwala followed by a Jyoti Sangeet. Nitumani Bora and Bikash Barua spoke on the occasion. Local artistes including Gajen Saikia, Purna Kanta Nath, Shishir Borthakur were felicitated with a gamosa and a sapling each by the organizers. Senior journalist Sailen Borkataky graced the occasion as an appointed speaker.
