DOOMDOOMA: Sadou Asom Lekhika Samaroh Samity (SALSS), Doomdooma Branch celebrated its silver jubilee recently with a day-long programme at Doomdooma college auditorium. The programme got underway with hoisting of 25 flags at its permanent venue on Raghav Moran path, Rupaisiding just near the college by president Dr Meena Devi Baruah and 24 other senior lady members. It was followed by smriti tarpan by founder president Bina Deka, a former principal of Doomdooma College.
The open session was held around noon at Doomdooma college auditorium ‘Kallol’ with Dr Meena Devi Baruah in the chair. In the beginning secretary Junumoni Bora explained the objectives of the meeting while president Dr Meena Devi Baruah welcomed the guests. The founder president Bina Deka reminisced about her meeting with the then vice president of Lekhika Samaroh Samity at Kolkata that eventually led to the opening of its branch at Doomdooma.
Abha Bora, president, SALSS, inaugurated the seminar on ‘The role of women in dislodging superstition from the society’. Two keynote speakers -Deepa Baruah, an executive member and Dr Sulekha Chakravorty, an educationist - elaborated at length on the subject. On interactive session Noni Bordoloi, a former subject teacher and a poet and journalist Dhiren Deka took part from the floor. A souvenir Meghamallar published on the occasion under the editorship of Dibyalata Deka was released by Darpana Bora Neog, chief secretary, SALSS.
On the other hand as a part of its publication, two books - one “Barerohonia”, an collection of essays on various topics by Dr Meena Devi Baruah and another “Jonaki Bator Lecheri”, a collection of short stories by Mira Saikia were inaugurated by Abha Bora, President, Lekhika Samaroh Samity and Bina Deka, founder President of the Doomdooma Sakha respectively. The winners of Art competition held among the school children and that of original short story reading competition held amongst the members of different branches of Lekhika Samaroh Samity’s Tinsukia District committee were awarded prizes in the meeting.
