Sivasagar celebrates District Day with colourful programmes

The programme kicked off with a Heritage Walk around the historic Borpukhuri followed by a Marathon, flag hoisting, women empowerment etc.. Art competitions, traditional fashion show, art exhibitions, cleanliness drives, plantation of saplings, and various other programmes were also held at various places of the district as part of the celebration.

SIVASAGAR: The Sivasagar district administration celebrated its District Day with fervour on Saturday.

The day-long programme kicked off with a Heritage Walk around the historic Borpukhuri followed by a Marathon, flag hoisting and a scooty rally showcasing women empowerment. Art competitions, traditional fashion show, art exhibitions, cleanliness drives, plantation of saplings, and various other programmes were also held at various places of the district as part of the celebration.

To mark the occasion, a public meeting was held in the auditorium of Sibsagar Commerce College which was attended by the State Education Minister and the Guardian Minister of Sivasagar district, Dr Ranoj Pegu. The minister in his speech said that the government had taken various steps to take Assamese art, culture and heritage to the global platform. He said that Sivasagar would become a developed district. In this regard, the government has already taken steps to develop the tourism sectors of the district as well as to make Rang Ghar a world-class site.

Pegu also informed that measures have been taken to set up medical colleges and universities for the development of health and education sectors in the district.

Speaking on the occasion, Sivasagar Deputy Commissioner Aditya Vikram Yadav, spoke about the progress made in respect of making Charaideo a World Heritage Site and for tourism development in the district. He also informed that a stadium would be set up in each development block for the uplift of sports in rural areas.

Coinciding with the celebration, minister Pegu handed over certificates and cheques to 16 out of the 831 Bihuyan, Bihuwati and Dhuliyan who participated in the Bihu dance programme on April 14 this year in Guwahati for inclusion in the Guinness Book of World Records. The minister also released a newsletter brought out by the district administration on the occasion of Sivasagar Divas at the meeting.

The curtains came down on the celebration with the staging of a drama titled Tetun Tamuli by the staff of the DC’s office, Sivasagar, which was inaugurated by noted educationist and principal of Gargaon College, Dr Sabyasachi Mahanta.
