Guwahati: Dipjyoti Gogoi, a Gauhati University (GU) student who sought to fraudulently collect funds via a popular Facebook page in the name of the Assam Chief Minister, has been arrested by police from his native Sivasagar.

On July 20, complainant Raju Kalita of the Crime Branch lodged an FIR stating that a post was found circulating on the social media platform, Facebook, by a certain Dipjyoti Gogoi, who is a 2nd-semester student studying at the Gauhati University (GU). The post was shared on a page named "সপোনৰ-অসম".

The post fraudulently projected Chief Minister of Assam Sarbananda Sonowal asking for a contribution from citizens to help flood-affected people as the Government exchequer was empty. In the said post, a bank account number, IFSC code, and Pan Card details were also linked where misled people could "donate".

Through the said Facebook post, some unknown culprit had tried to manipulate the general people of Assam to contribute through a bank account for raising funds for the flood-affected people. In the said post, the Chief Minister of Assam's portfolio and Government of Assam's logo had been fraudulently used for creating a post appealing to the general people of Assam that the Government's coffers are empty and general citizen's contribution is a must to save Assam from the havoc of floods.

The post has been declared as "fake" by the Directorate of Information & Public Relations (DIPR), Guwahati. In this regard, the Crime Branch Police Station case no 11/20 US 419/420/34 IPC RW Sec 66 C IT Act WAS registered and investigated.

After investigation, it became clear that the post was circulated by Dipjyoti Gogoi, a resident of Thowra Majgaon Under Demow Police Station. Accordingly, the accused was apprehended and brought to the Crime branch on July 21. He was arrested and forwarded to judicial custody and legal action against the culprit is underway.
