Social worker Dharma Kanta Gogoi's demise condoled

DOOMDOOMA: Dharma Kanta Gogoi, a leading social worker of the town, and a resident of Bezbarooah Xarani, breathed his last at a private nursing home in Dibrugarh on Tuesday. He was 84 and is survived by his wife, a son and a married daughter.

Born at Hologuri Pahi gaon in Sivasagar district, he had his early education at Amguri at his maternal uncle's residence and thereafter got himself enrolled in BA course at Sivasagar College. He joined Hoonlal H.E. (now H.S.) School, Doomdooma as an assistant teacher on August 20, 1957 and after a very eventful teaching career spanning over four decades, he attained his superannuation in 1994. In the midst of his teaching, he also looked after Moina Parijat Chora, a forum for enhancement of creativity of small children, started by Sailadhar Barkataki, for some time and then after the Chinese aggression in 1962, he introduced for the first time Scouts and Guides and then National Cadet Corps (NCC) in the school.

For this, he had to get himself trained from time to time to attain different ranks of NCC Officer. On the socio-cultural front, he was secretary of Doomdooma Sakha Xahitya Xabha and president of Doomdooma Namghar Samity for many years. He was a strict disciplinarian and could imbibe the sense of discipline and punctuality in the minds of the students in their impressionable age with his good humour and amusing stories. His death has cast a pall of gloom in this premier industrial township and has been widely mourned by many organizations, including Doomdooma Namghar Samity, Doomdooma Sakha Xahitya Xabha, Doomdooma Press Club, Doomdooma Rotary Club and Tinsukia Zila Xahitya Xabha.
