Social worker Dr Nirupama Mahanta conferred 'Sati Radhika Award' for 2022

SIVASAGAR: Eminent writer and social worker Dr Nirupama Mahanta was conferred the 'Sati Radhika Award' for the year 2022 on Saturday. The honour was presented at a solemn function organized by the All Sivasagar District Scheduled Caste Students' Union at the auditorium of Aoikya in Sivasagar. The award was presented by former chief secretary of Axam Xahitya Xabha and eminent litterateur Xahityacharya Dr Nahendra Padun.

Presenting the award, Dr Nahendra Padun said, "There is a need to discuss more about Sati Radhika. History has to be studied for this."

Expressing happiness on receiving the award, Dr Nirupama Mahanta spoke on how Srimanta Sankardev and Sati Radhika had made efforts to eradicate casteism in the past. She also said that she would try to write a novel about Sati Radhika. Dr Mahanta said, "Sati Radhika gave courage and showed the way to the women society in her era. It is very important for the present generation to know about such women." "The women in our society must strive to possess great qualities like Sati Radhika's self-power, truthfulness and integrity," Dr Mahanta added.

The union also presented the Sati Radhika Ideal Award to Dihanaam artist Sangita Bora, teacher Kalpana Hazarika and social worker Binjana Das at the event hosted by Mridul Das, secretary of the union's Sivasagar district committee. Scientist Dr Sarbeshwar Das, Principal of Sibsagar Commerce College Dr Saumar Jyoti Mahanta, central secretary of the union, Parash Das and a large number of dignitaries were present on the occasion.

Dr Nirupama Mahanta, mother of Director General of Police, Assam, Bhaskarjyoti Mahanta, has been contributing to the cultural field, besides writing stories, novels and contemplative articles.
