LAKHIMPUR: Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist) (SUCI(C)) has once again reiterated its demand for the cancellation of Assam Government’s decision to introduce fees for the permission of political meetings, cultural events etc. In this connection, the Lakhimpur District Committee of the political party criticized the State government with strong terms and submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma in support of the demand.

In the memorandum, signed by Anupam Chutia, Secretary SUCI (C), Lakhimpur District Committee, the political party has opined that the people of Assam have to suffer a lot for massive increase in the taxes and fees by the State government in various areas like municipal tax, land rent, toll tax, electricity tariff etc.

“Even after that, the fees imposed on the citizens of an independent country for holding political rallies, sports and cultural events and obtaining business permits are not appropriate under any circumstances. We have noticed that your government is seriously increasing expenditure on unproductive and unnecessary activities like Amrit Kalash Yatra, Amrit Briksh Andolan, beneficiary increase etc. We believe that your government has to put the people of the State in trouble like that way just to make up the expenditure, expended for the luxurious lifestyle of ministers and bureaucrats and the construction of new buildings for them. In our firm opinion, this is a very reactive step against the inclusive development and progress of a backward State like ours in all aspects- like political, economic, socio-cultural etc.”, the memorandum said.

“Discussions in political rallies-meetings play important role for the success of the democratic system and to raise the political consciousness of the citizens of the society. Similarly, cultural and sports events play important role in mental and cultural wellbeing. But high fees imposed for permission of such rallies and events will severely disrupt these processes, leading to further backwardness in the society. In addition, excessive licensing fees will have a negative impact on other people in the society, including small businessmen, in the free expansion of businesses which play an important role in economic development and progress. The government of an independent country should never use the weapon of high fee increases, used by the imperialist power in the occupied countries as a tool to hinder the consciousness, culture and economic development of Indians”, the memorandum further said.

Under such circumstances, the Lakhimpur District Committee of the SUCI (C) demanded immediate cancellation of the fees imposed on political rallies, cultural events etc. which have allegedly hit the people of the State.
