Sonitpur district administration to observe District Day on August 3

TEZPUR: To commemorate the district formation day of Sonitpur district on August 3, 1983 from erstwhile Darrang district, the Sonitpur district administration has planned a series of programmes to mark the day.

A cycle rally, organized jointly by the District Women and Child Development department and District Sports Office, at 6 AM will mark the opening of the day-long programme. This will be followed by inauguration of newly-renovated Ananda Chandra Agarwala park maintained by Tezpur Environment Society at 7 AM, followed by a Yoga camp at the park from 7.10 AM. At 8:30 AM, an art competition on the theme ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ will be opened followed by a live art demonstration by renowned artistes of the district on themes related to District Day.

Later, at 9:30am, an Organic Hub will be inaugurated at the office premises of the District Agriculture Officer for sale of organic produce by farmers of Sonitpur district. This will remain open daily for consumers. Also, a wall painting at DC Ooffice will also be done on the occasion, on themes related to Sonitpur district.

In order to create awareness about breast cancer especially among women over 40 years of age, a Medical Mammography Awareness Camp will be organized by Rotary Club, Tezpur at the conference hall of DC’s office. Around 200 Anganwadi workers will be present in this camp after which they will take part in a phase-wise mammography free-of-cost at Tezpur Cancer Centre, Tumuki in the coming days. This programme will also cover female teachers and others.

One of the highlights of the District Day programme will be an on-the-spot Jaipur Artificial Limb and Jaipur Calliper fitment camp organized jointly by Bhagvan Mahavir Viklang Sahayata Samiti, Jaipur in association with Indian Red Cross Society, Tezpur, Women & Child Development department and Sonitpur district administration. The free-of-cost camp will be inaugurated by MP Pallab Lochan Das at Tezpur Government Higher Secondary School at 10.15 AM. Already around 700 beneficiaries have been identified for the camp and subsequent camps will be held at regular intervals every few months.

A massive plantation drive will also be carried out on the occasion of District Day at Burhachapori Wildlife Sanctuary in joint association of the Forest department and Rotary Club, Guwahati West, covering a total area of 200 bighas. On the first day the plantation drive will be carried out in 50 bighas and preliminary preparation works have already begun.

In another programme, an animal welfare shelter home and an animal vaccination Ccamp will be inaugurated at Tezpur University. The programme has been taken up by Rotary Club, Tezpur in association with Animal Welfare Club, Tezpur University.

Later in the day, a special lecture on “’Sonitpuror Jibon Gatha,Iyar Udbhavon, Uttoron aru Udjapon’ will be delivered by noted historian and academician Dr Rajen Saikia at a programme to be held at Baan Theatre from 4 PM.

The open session of the day will be held at Baan Theatre 6.30 PM onwards where several students and persons who have brought laurels to the district will be felicitated on the occasion. In line with the government’s aim to reduce road accidents across the state, a brief skit on road safety awareness will also be presented on the occasion. Later, noted dramatist Baharul Islam and his troupe, Seagull Theatre will perform a play Akash based on the story by Dr Bhabendranath Saikia.

In this connection, District Commissioner Deba Kumar Mishra met with leading citizens of Sonitpur district on Monday and held a detailed discussion regarding observance of Sonitpur district day. He later also addressed the media at a press meet held at the conference hall of the DC’s office and sought cooperation from all regarding successful conduct of the programme.
