Sonitpur Police seize 575 kg ganja worth over Rs 5 crore

TEZPUR: In one of the biggest drug hauls in Sonitpur, police seized 575 kg of suspected ganja (cannabis) in Bhalukpong area under Chariduar PS and arrested one person in this connection, police officials said on Wednesday.

A team of Sonitpur police led by Additional Superintendent of Police, Crime, Birinchi Bora and IC Bhalukpong, Paban Kumar Sut and OC Chariduar, Dipu Bora of Chariduar PS under the supervision of Superintendent of Police, Sushanta Biswa Sarma, intercepted a vehicle bearing registration number AS12 AC 5904 that came from Arunachal Pradesh, at Bhalukpong checking point near the Assam-Arunachal Border under Chariduar PS in Sonitpur district and seized 575 kg of ganja.

The market value of the seized ganja is estimated at around Rs 5 crore to Rs 10 crore, sources added. The police also arrested one person identified as Indrajit Mandal of West Bengal and seized a vehicle bearing registration number WB 6A 9170, informed Additional SP (Headquarters) Madhurima Das.

Taking to Twitter, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote, “In a remarkable breakthrough in our sustained drive against drugs, @SonitpurPolice has seized 575 kgs of suspected ganja (Cannabis) from a pick-up vehicle at Bhalukpong checking point under Chariduar PS, near Assam-Arunachal border.”
