Lakhimpur: After the stunning victory in the Assam Municipal Board Election, 2022, the ruling party BJP has gradually initiated moves to constitute 75 municipal boards across the State out of 80 to which election was held on March 6. As per result declared on March 9, the ruling party has won three municipal boards of Lakhimpur district while opposition party Congress has registered its majority in one municipal board.

In the district, BJP has won North Lakhimpur Municipal Board, Dhakuakhana Municipal Board and Bihpuria Municipal Board with absolute majority. On the other hand, Congress has won the Narayanpur Municipal Board with five winner ward commissioners out of the 10 seats.

In North Lakhimpur Municipal Board, BJP has bagged 14 seats out of 21 while its alliance party AGP has won one seat. In the meantime, conjecture looms large over North Lakhimpur civic area as to who will be the chairperson of the district headquarter civic body?

Notably, the post of chairperson of North Lakhimpur Municipal Board has been reserved for woman. A total of 6 female Ward Commissioners representing the BJP, out of 11 reserved seats of the civic body, have been elected in the recent election. Momtaz Begum has been elected from Ward No. 2(A) while Nibedita Dutta has been elected from Ward No. 3(A). Similarly, Jyoti Das has been elected from Ward No. 5(B) while Mina Das Saha has been elected from Ward No. 9. On the other hand, Krishna Rani Dhar Sen and Dipika Gogoi have been elected from Ward No. 10 and Ward No. 14(A) respectively. All these are qualified women. Among them, social worker Nibedita Dutta, retired subject teacher Mina Das Saha, St. Mary's School teacher Krishna Rani Dhar Sen and social worker Dipika Gogoi are in the march for the post of chairperson of North Lakhimpur Municipal Board. Each of four has received support from various directions in the party with their influential attitude and activities.

Similarly, speculation continues in Dhakuakhana too regarding the projection of winner Ward Commissioners as chairperson and vice-chairperson of Dhakuakhana Municipal Board. In this civic body, BJP has won 9 seats out of 10 while independent candidate Bogen Konwar has bagged the Ward No. 1 seat by defeating the AGP Ward Commissioner candidate. Later, Bogen Konwar joined the BJP, due to which all seats of the civic body have gone to the saffron party, making it free of opposition. In this civic body, the name of prominent social worker Swaroop Konwar, who has been elected from Ward No. 6, is in public discussion as the chairperson to be while Bogen Konwar is in the march for the post vice-chairperson. However, it is known that the ruling party will take decision regarding the post of chairperson of the North Lakhimpur Municipal Board along with others after the State-level meeting of the party to be held on March 13 in Guwahati.

"In the meeting, various issues and subjects regarding the constitution of the Municipal Board in the State will be discussed in details. The selection of the chairpersons will depend upon the resolutions taken in the meeting," stated Lakhimpur unit BJP president Phanidhar Baruah.
