UDALGURI: The Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) had organized a stakeholders consultative meeting on the new education policy at Udalguri College.
The session was inaugurated by Gobinda Chandra Basumatari, BTC deputy chief and MLA of Udalguri constituency. The BTR new education policy is lined up with the National Education Policy but there are some vexed problems which have to be resolved in the region, he said. "The lowering enrolment in Bodo medium schools was alarming. That is why we are trying to revive the situation with utmost care," he said.
The meeting was chaired by Dr Luke Daimari the Principal of Udalguri College. The Udalguri district committees of Bodo Sahitya Sabha, Nepali Sahitya Sabha, ABSU, Rabha Sahitya Sabha, Assam Madhyamik Shikshak aru Karmachari Santha and others presented their views on the new education policy and gave their suggestions. Tanka Bahadur Gautam Chhetry, the Vice Principal, Dr. Nareswar Narzari outlined the vexed problems of higher education in BTR region. Citing the examples of Udalguri College, they said that the college had to admit 1,552 students in a class this year while the college had only 20 sanctioned posts and more than 40 teachers were rendering service without payment. The college also faces infrastructural problems to adjust to the large number of students, they said.
In this meeting, Dr. Laisram Ladu Singh, the Vice-Chancellor of Bodoland University who was also the chairman of Drafting Committee of the BTR New Education Policy, also spoke about his observation on the educational scenario in the region.
