Storm Damages Over 400 Houses in Karimganj, 1 Child Dead

More than 428 families across five village panchayats were affected by this massive storm

SILCHAR: The Barak Valley region of the state of Assam was hit by a massive storm on Friday which caused massive damage to property across the region and the death of one child.

According to the reports, more than 400 houses were damaged across the Karimganj district of the state of Assam by the storm on Friday.

The circle officer of the Pathardandi revenue circle, Arpita Dutta Mazumder mentioned that more than 428 families across five village panchayats were affected by this massive storm. Several houses were completely damaged while many others had their roofs blown off.

"A 7-year-old child died in the storm. As per the initial report, as many as 14 houses were severely damaged. Our assessment is going on. The affected families will be compensated as per the government norms," Arpita Dutta Mazumder added. The child was inside a house which collapsed due to the storm, causing his death.

Before this incident raging storm caused damage in several parts of Nalbari on the night of Tuesday. Apart from damages to the property of the local people, the storm also damaged the stage of an ongoing Bihu celebration in the region. The whole region has been suffering from an intense heat wave in the last few days mainly due to the lack of rain. Also, the rains are expected to bring down the temperature but the accompanying winds caused massive damage.

It was also the final day of the Bihu celebrations carried out in some parts of the state, including the 16th edition of the Helsa Rongali Bihu celebrated annually and the thunderstorm wreaked havoc during the celebrations. The performers came off the stage in the middle of their performance before the state was damaged. Heavy rains and accompanying winds caused massive damage to the stage causing it to collapse.
