GUWAHATI: A cyclone-like storm-lashed Jorhat and neighboring areas uprooting trees, electric poles and leaving behind a trail of massive destruction.
Majuli disaster management department informed that several houses were damaged with roofs blown away at Lahonaon, Gayangaon, Nikinikhuwa, Dakhinpat, Meragarh, Phuloni, Jogigaon, Salmora under Ujani Majuli Revenue Circle, and Sukansuti gaon under Majuli Revenue Circle due to last night's storm that blew over the Majuli island at around 11.30 PM.
Trees were uprooted and power poles fell on the ground on roads in many areas across the river island. Restoration efforts are underway, the official stated.
Since April, massive erosion caused by the mighty Brahmaputra has posed an alarming threat to the Sissi-Tekeliputa embankment, which secures the life and properties of over five lakh people living in Dhakuakhana and the largest river island Majuli. At present too, erosion of the mighty river has affected the down part of the Bandena check bundh to the east of Matmora area. On the other hand, erosion still continues in the Madarguri area to the west of Matmora.
During the month of May, the erosion of the river assumed demonic proportion covering a 1-km stretch under Bandena area, report about which was published in The Sentinel. This erosion-hit area was inspected by Water Resources Department (WRD) minister Pijush Hazarika on May 27 in order to take stock of the situation.
After the visit of the WRD minister, as per the direction of the department concerned, the Dhakuakhana WRD Division adopted a scheme to control the erosion of the river in the Bandena area with a fund amounting to Rs 1 crore. At present, the WRD Divisional office has implemented the scheme by installing porcupines.
