Street play on mental health staged in Sonitpur

A street play on creating awareness about mental illness was organised by the District Mental Health Programme under the District Health Society, Sonitpur at various places of Greater Tezpur town.

TEZPUR: A street play on creating awareness about mental illness was organised by the District Mental Health Programme under the District Health Society, Sonitpur at various places of Greater Tezpur town. The programme aims to increase awareness about the devastating health, social and economic consequences of mental health.

The programme was conducted by Dr Pradip Kumar Sarma, District Programme Officer and Jyotsna Kullu, PSW, District Mental Health Programme, Sonitpur. The street play was directed and written by journalist and cultural activist Dip Kumar Kalita and artistes included Dristi Bharali, Sarjina Begum, Swapna Saikia, Priyanka Singh and Dip Kumar Kalita.

Attending the programme, Dr Pradip Kumar Sarma emphasized in creating awareness and taking early treatment. He also said that the mental health problem is a complex public health issue. People with mental health problems have to bear the brunt of stigma and discrimination. To dispel stigma and discrimination, awareness generation among people is necessary. Dr Sarma also shared incidents he faced during treating the patients and those who had suicidal tendency.
