TEZPUR: With the rest of the State, in Tezpur also, under the aegis of the Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist), Sonitpur District Committee, a massive protest was staged on Friday at the Tezpur Court Chariali demanding release of mill workers' pending wages and against the failure of the State Government to revive the paper mills.

SUCI (C) activists raised slogans against the government under the leadership of secretary of the Tezpur chapter, Ajay Acharya. They alleged that the Cachar and Nagaon paper mills remained closed for the past year without any reason and the government had also stopped payment of salaries. They said the workers have not got their salaries for the last 45 months.

Cachar Paper Mill and Nagaon Paper Mill, which once contributed significantly towards economic development of the State, are currently going through tough times because of huge liabilities. SUCI(C) activists also said that some employees had started pan shops and some were doing labour work for their livelihood.
