DIBRUGARH: A fortnight summer workshop on 'Biyanaam' (marriage songs), folk culture of Assamese community, jointly organized by District Cultural Centre, Government of Assam and Upasana Kola Kendra, Banipur, concluded successfully on July 30 with a note to preserve such age-old traditional Assamese folk culture and its unique features absolutely in days to come.
All total 45 participants comprising youths to elderly women, including some of them from the tea tribes community, attended the workshop, held from July 15 to July 30. The valedictory function organized on July 30 was graced by noted poet and former Professor of Dibrugarh University, Dr Karabi Deka Hazarika, former Prof. of Mathematics, DU, and social activist Gopal Hazarika, District Development Commissioner Sanjay Dutta, Cultural Development Officer, Dibrugarh, Bhanita Hira Das, Inspector of School, Dibrugarh, Dipika Chowdhury and senior journalist I. Ahmed.
Inaugurating the meeting, the chief guest, Dr Hazarika appreciated the District Cultural Development Officer and management of Upasana Kola Kendra for organizing workshop on 'Biyanaam' and its dramatic depiction of an Assamese marriage, which according to her was "a unique effort by the organizers to revive the ancient rich folk culture Biyanaam through research and flawless portrayal of traditional marriage rituals".
Expressing asimilar view, Dr Gopal Hazarika, in his brief speech, appreciated the participants for their performances. " The new generation will certainly be enriched with their traditional culture through this workshop," he said.
Earlier, the president of Upasona Kola Kendra, Dipak Kumar Dutta while welcoming the guests and others, briefed the purpose of organizing such workshop and also stated that it was a sincere effort to preserve and popularize such a rich culture, which according to him, "is in the wane in the society due to invasion of decadent culture".
Other dignitaries who spoke on the occasion lauded Upasona Kola Kendra Principal Tarun Chandra Gogoi and its chief founder, cine and telefilm actor, producer, script writer and educationist, Jharna Saikia for their dedicated efforts in upholding the rich culture of Assam through Upasona Kola Kendra since its foundation on 2004.
