IMPHAL: The Supreme Court of India has issued directives to the Manipur police, ensuring that they refrain from taking any coercive actions against retired army officer Col (Dr) Vijaykant Chenji. These actions were in connection with an FIR (First Information Report) registered against him in the state. The FIR stemmed from the contents of his book titled "The Anglo Kuki War 1917-19: Victory in Defeat."

Additionally, the apex court also extended protection to Professor Henminlunin, shielding him from coercive actions by the Manipur police. This protection is related to another FIR based on his alleged hate speech.

The court's intervention came after it was brought to light that members of a particular community in Manipur felt compelled to approach the highest court in the land for relief. This drastic step became necessary as lawyers in the state were reportedly unwilling to represent them due to threats and intimidation.

Chief Justice of India (CJI), in response to the distressing situation, instructed both Col (retd) Vijaykant Chenji and Professor Henminlunin to file affidavits. These affidavits were to outline the circumstances that forced them to seek direct recourse to the Supreme Court for relief, bypassing the usual legal channels such as the high court in Manipur.

The CJI, while acknowledging the retired colonel's status and his authorship of a book, emphasized the need to protect individuals like him. In his statement, the CJI remarked, "He is a retired colonel. He wrote a book. He must be protected. The only question is, do we protect you here or send you back to the high court?"

This development underscores the significance of upholding the fundamental rights of individuals, especially in regions where legal representation and protection may be compromised due to external pressures. The Supreme Court's intervention serves as a beacon of hope for those seeking justice in challenging circumstances.
