Guwahati: Based on intelligent inputs about the movements of the ULFA-I cadres at Phaneng village under Margherita subdivision near Assam Arunachal Pradesh border, Lekhapani Police, Jagun Police along with security forces jointly launched an operation under the supervision of Tinsukia Superintendent of Police, Mugdhajyoti Dev Mahanta on Thursday.
Speaking to The Sentinel Digital, Lekhapani Police Station, the officer in charge, Monweshwar Bey said, "We had our inputs from our sources that some movements were being carried out in Phaneng, Wara and Mungkham village near Assam Arunachal Border from last two to three days. We are yet to ascertain the reasons for their movements, however, we continued our operation."
OC Bey also stated that the incident was reported at around 11 am in the morning when some alleged ULFA-I cadres open fired on the police and security forces from the forest area.
"We counter fired upon them, however, there were no casualties reported from their side. Later, they escaped from the spot," OC Bey added.
It has been also suspected by the security forces and Assam Police that there were around 10 to 12 ULFA-I cadres apparently roaming around the border areas of Assam-Arunachal Pradesh.
Police also informed that the security forces and Assam Police had tightened up security in the border areas.
It may further be mentioned that the police also suspect that the above-given picture is of the cadres from the outlawed faction ULFA-I and they were allegedly taking shelter in the border areas from last few days.
