Suspended Assam BJP Leader Dipanjali Kakati Arrested for Assaulting Cop

Suspended Bharatiya Janata Party leader Dipanjali Kakati physically assaulted a police officer on duty inside Kakopathar police station and fled the scene.

GUWAHATI: Suspended Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Dipanjali Kakati has been arrested in Tinsukia from her residence on charges of assaulting a police official.

According to CCTV footage, Dipanjali Kakati physically assaulted a police officer on duty inside Kakopathar Police Station after the police officer refused to set free a culprit who was brought to the police station for questioning.

Further, the BJP leader has been booked under Section 332 of the IPC, a non-bailable offence.

Reportedly, Dipanjali physically assaulted Apurba Das, a sub-inspector of the Kakopathar Police Station.

According to reports, Deepanjali Kakoty Moran, an executive member of State BJP and resident of Dirak Powai, engaged in an altercation with sub-inspector Aupurba Das over the release of her driver Srikanta Phukan who was wanted by police in connection with assault on a woman case.

Initially, she allegedly used abusive language and later forcibly attempted to take out Phukan from the police station.

When SI Das prevented her from doing so, she pushed him aside and allegedly assaulted Das physically.

Though a case vide no 48/2020 was registered against Deepanjali Kakoty Phukan u/s294/448/332/427.

Assam BJP suspended Kakati soon after a complaint was registered last year in November 2020 against her.

The FIR was registered at Kakopathar police station on November 8. Notably, Kakoti filed for pre-arrest bail in this regard, however, it remained cancelled.

Earlier on January 21, Police arrested a BJP leader for allegedly sodomising two minor boys for the last several months in Jalaun district. BJP office-bearer Ram Bihari, 63, was produced before a local court in Jalaun and was sent to judicial custody.

Following his arrest, the BJP has expelled Bihari. Before joining BJP, Bihari used to work as a revenue officer and had retired in 2017.

The accused was arrested after the police had found that the accused used to record the sexual assaults through CCTV cameras installed in his room.
