LAKHIMPUR: “Drama cannot continue its journey and last long ignoring human being and society. The dramatic tradition in India is wealthy since ancient age and socially responsible. Though their is a lot of potential for the contemporary Assamese drama, the pace of the same seems to have stalled a little somewhere,” stated Rabijita Gogoi, the noted dramatist and director of the State.
Rabijita Gogoi said so while delivering her lecture in a symposium organized by the Department of Assamese of North Lakhimpur College (Autonomous) on Thursday. The symposium was held on a topic, “The Social Role of Drama in the Present Day Context.”
The event was chaired by Dr. Arabinda Rajkhowa, the Head of the Department of Assamese, North Lakhimpur College (Autonomous) and it was inaugurated by Principal Dr. Biman Chandra Chetia. In the event, Dayal Krishna Nath, the Director of the Abhinava Theatre, Phulbari, the co-organizer of the symposium, shed light on various aspects of the cultural degradation in Assamese society with examples. He also spoke about how social awareness could be created through drama.
Prominent theater director and actress of Bangladesh, Shameema Akhtar Mukta explained how she had been working to change the social attitudes through drama in her country. Bangladesh journalist, present at the event, Mujibul Haque also spoke in the event which was attended by Professors Dr. Dhanaranjan Kalita, Dr. Dhiraj Pator, Munmi Dutta along with researchers and students of the college.
