Former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Monday said that around 11 crore people have lost their jobs and livelihood across the country due to the ongoing nationwide lockdown imposed by the Centre to contain the coronavirus.

Addressing the media here, Gogoi said that "the Government should now focus on creating employment and ensuring livelihood for the people."

The veteran Congress leader also said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had promised two crore jobs, but now there have been 11 crore job losses instead. "PM of India Sri Modiji who promised Achhe Din with two crores job creation in every year and to deposit an amount of Rs. 15 lakh in each Bank account is to a great extent responsible for his whimsical decision of demonetisation, wrong implementation of GST and abrupt declaration of lock-down without proper planning and policy", Gogoi alleged.

Alleging that the government has completely failed in handling the migrant workers' problems, Gogoi pointed to how thousands of migrant workers are facing hardships and walking thousands of kilometres to reach home and added that the "lockdown has hit the economy hard."

Gogoi also criticised the Assam government and alleged that the government has floundered in putting in place a comprehensive, full-proof plan to get the stranded people back to their homes.

With the economy having taken a huge hit, Gogoi sought further relaxation of lockdown rules while at the same time imploring the ruling regime to "step up screening and testing" facilities

Gogoi, meanwhile, has also demanded a CBI investigation into the alleged corruption in PM Kisan Yojana under which Rs 1,000 is credited in the accounts of farmers.
