Guwahati: 7 individuals were nabbed by police on July 3, reportedly for running a teer (gambling) racket, reportedly in Assam's Nagaon district.

The Nagaon police, in a cheeky reference, compared the gamblers to Micky Rosa, a character played by the acclaimed Hollywood actor Kevin Spacey, in the 2008 heist film '21'. "This 'Micky Rosa' inspired from "21" who is running interstate TEER(gambling) Racket chooses the wrong team at the wrong place. Yesterday night, Nagaon Police has sent them to the right place (Jail)", a tweet posted on the police's official Twitter handle read.

"There has been a lockdown for a long time so there has been no criminal activity of note in this time period. Now, we have nabbed 7 individuals for running an illegal teer racket. This should not happen in society, which is why we have been prompt in taking action. We are in a period of peace and anti-social activities in this period of lull are far and few between. But it is our duty to ensure that such things do not take root in society. This bunch has been sent to jail custody under relevant provisions of the law and we hope this will dissuade other people from taking up such illegal activities as a pastime", Ashok Kumar Dutta, the OC of Nagaon Sadar Police Station told The Sentinel Digital.

Teer, the traditional betting on an arrow shooting game, resumed in June in Meghalaya, after a gap of over 70 days (due to the lockdown) bringing relief to thousands of people whose livelihood depends on this legalized gambling. It is a traditional pastime as well as a source of income in many in the hill state but is illegal in Assam.
