SILCHAR: Tensions have been prevailing in Silchar's Ashram Road and its nearby areas following the recovery of dead body of a minor girl on Wednesday.

The girl, who was around 16 years old, was missing for the last four days and her family had lodged a first information report with police. On Wednesday morning, the girl was found dead in a river. The news spread like wildfire and it caused uproar among the residents of Ashram Road.

After the dead body reached Ashram Road (her house) on Wednesday afternoon, a group of locals went berserk and attacked a house. The house belongs to the deceased's rumoured boyfriend. The irate mob vandalised the house and thereafter set the boy's motorcycle on fire. The locals did not stop there and later started vandalising shops in that area following which police personnel, who were deployed there, resorted to cane charge to disperse the unruly mob. Some bullets were also fired in the air. At least three shops were damaged in the attack on Wednesday evening.

The enraged people, who also pelted stones at shops, pedestrians and cops to vent their fury over the incident, claimed the girl was gangraped by her boyfriend and his friends and murdered thereafter. The girl's family members too have made the same claim and demanded justice.

Police have detained the girl's boyfriend and two others in connection with the incident. Security has been beefed up at Ashram Road and its nearby areas to avoid further escalation of the incident.
